Elsa makes rugs at one of the stops we made while visiting a Navaho trading post I think near Prescott, Arizona. First I took a picture from her right side and then went around to her left side and took another picture. As I was leaving she pointed out a shallow basket next to her.
Our conversation went something like this.
Me: “How much?”
She: “” One Dollar”
Me: ” I took 2 pictures”
She, smiling : ” One Dollar”

I then went on to find out she had been weaving rugs since she was thirteen and her name is Elsa.

This picture is #26 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com/

  1. I wonder how many miles of yarn she has woven into those rugs throughout the years? Am glad she wasn’t shy about asking for compensation for the photo-op! It probably pays better than weaving considering all the time that it must take to complete a rug. Glad to hear her story no matter how brief! Cannot have been an easy life for her.
