On the corner of Middle and Exchange Streets in Portland, Maine, near Tommy’s Park, Starbuck’s , numerous boutiques and art gallery’s and some of the best restaurants in the country if not the world sits Mark’s Hot Dogs. For almost 27 years Mark has served up some of the best hot dogs you could ever have.Mark
The fare is simple. Boiled red skin or brown on heated rolls. What would like on it yellow or brown spicy how about onions or sauerkraut or chili? There is green relish or red spicy relish. Dogs not to your liking then how about Italian sausage with pepper and onions.

The part of all is Mark. No matter what the weather you are always greeted with a smile and a warm hello. So if you want a great dog and the ambiance to go with it just look for the little red cart on the corner of Middle and Exchange Streets in Portland, Maine.

I met Jose at the dump today.  I was there getting rid of some stuff from my house.  I sawJose him busying himself but picking up trash from around the oversize dumpsters.  I asked him if he worked for the city but he said “No, I just like to pick up when I am here because sometimes the old ladies come here and I don’t want them to trip.”

I usually see some regulars here scrounging for whatever they can sell.  I met John here in 2008.  John is disability but can’t Hard Timesget a place of his own until his case gets settled.  I don’t really understand but he has been here since I first met him.  He used to work as a painter but now he gets buy collecting bottles and cans that people give him.  He carry’s everything he owns in a shopping cart.  Jose and John have know each other for a while.

Anyway Jose comes from Carbo St Lucas in Mexico.  He still has family there.  When I asked if I could take his picture he joked and wanted to know if I was going to turn him in?  He assured me that he was legal and has been here in the States for 27 years and has always worked  until arthritis afflicted his hands.  He said he is waiting to get them fixed so he can return to work.  He refuses to go on disability.  He is typical of the Mexican I have know both here and in Mexico  very hard working.

This is Starr the Pigeon caller. I met Starr in front of the Portland Museum of Art. Who would have thought an art museum would be a good place to find pigeons? Starr has been feeding pigeons and there were literally hundreds of them on the ground and flying around his head. Starr loves these birds and a you can see he has developed a very close relationship with them. Starr is very open and welcoming to the birds, to me, and a lot of people passing by gave him a big wave and a smiling hello. It’s nice to have someone like Starr a part of this community.
