The Jersey Shore

Replenishing BeachRebuilding from Hurricane Sandy involves replacing lost beach areas.  These projects are run under the direction of the U.S. Corp of Engineers.  The dredger that you see in the distance dredges up sand form offshore where it is piped to the beach area to be rebuilt.  The gushing water is the sand and water being pumped onshore where it is pushed around by the dozers.  Sea birds lunch on sea life which is also pushed up.  What is not seen is that the sand is put through strainers which isolate old ammunition sucked up that was left over from WWII.  Demolition crews inspect this to see if any of it is still live.  One week later after this picture was taken the board walk in Atlantic city was partially destroyed by fire.  These two events occurred  less than a year apart.
